The exhibition will show for the first time all the ancient examples of Michelangelo's bronze portraits attributed to Daniele da Volterra, addressing the complex relationship between originals, replicas and derivations. The problem of the autography of Michelangelo's bronze portraits has long been felt in the field of art history studies: with the exception of the bust of Casa Buonarroti in Florence, which remained the property of the heirs for centuries, there is in fact substantial uncertainty about the autography and provenance of the numerous specimens existing in various Italian and foreign collections.
