Fountains in Florence: public water that gets rid of both thirst and plastic

Natural or sparkling, just push a button and fill up water bottles. Get to know them all with our fountain-to-fountain route to always stay #hydrated.

What is it? An initiative by Publiacqua, the company that deals with the water supply of some of the main Tuscan provinces, including Florence. It was created in 2009 with the first fountain marking the beginning of Florence as an eco-friendly city.

Where can the fountains be found? You can find fountains scattered all over the city. To make things easier, we have created a MAP for you! Since 2015, they can also be found in the areas of Fucecchio, Empoli, Montespertoli, Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, Figline and Incisa Valdarno, Pelago, Pontassieve, Dicomano, Vicchio, Scarperia San Piero and Campi Bisenzio.

What can you drink? Whether you want natural, fizzy, or to shake the bottle a little to get half-and-half, you can find water that undergoes many tests to ensure quality and safety.

Why use them? If you're wondering why bother to make the effort to leave your home with your arms full of empty bottles and then to return home with full, heavy bottles, (we recommend using a trolley), wait in a queue (have a chat!), or even risk it being out of order (oh no!) ... The answer is simple:

Save money, drink good quality water and above all contribute to saving TONS of plastic.

A starting point for an itinerary "from fountain to fountain" for those who love to run, walk, cycle, or are just curious. Have a little stretch, lace up your shoes, take a deep breath, and go.

#Hydrated Jogging in 3 stages - Oltrarno

Begin from 1. Fontanello - via Villamagna and start your tour feeling fresh. Enjoy the breeze of the Lungarno and the shade of the trees in parco dell'Anconella, the green lung of south Florence.

Continuing from here, the choice is yours: work up a bit of lactic acid and jog as far as piazzale Michelangelo, then walk along the walls of Porta Romana, or head towards Santo Spirito. In either case, the direction is 2. Fontanello - piazza Tasso, the centre of the local community with basketball and football pitches, benches, murals, and eccentric characters.

Caught your breath? The last piece is the most challenging. Your final goal is among the peace and quiet of life just outside the centre: 3. Fontanello - via Canova. Stop, dampen your wrists and temples and enjoy your well-deserved rest, yes, in the parco di Villa Vogel.

#Hydrated Jogging in 3 stages - Beyond the centre

Even in the "famous part of Florence" there are many options among the monuments to find some drinking water, also leading you to discover some interesting corners of Florence! 1. Fontanello - piazza Vittoria, a bit of stretching under the pine trees, a nice drink of water and you're ready to head towards the second stop, not before stopping at the adjacent Giardini dell’Orticoltura with its historic greenhouse.

A further 2 km and you find yourself in 2. Fontanello - viale Manfredo Fanti, right in front of the Stadio Artemio Franchi. This is the perfect place to walk far and wide as a true Florentine, directly underneath the hills of Fiesole. And with a small final step, you're almost done, ending up in 3. Fontanello - via del Mezzetta.

Restore those minerals you lost, feel pleasantly tired and have a lie down in the parco di San Salvi, a unique spot due its status as a former psychiatric hospital.
