Three Things to Do in Florence for Gardening Enthusiasts This Spring

Firenze Flower Show, Giardino dell'Iris, and Plant and Flower Market Show

From exhibitions of rare plants to flowering gardens offering green oases of peace and beauty, Florence becomes an unmissable destination with three events of exceptional beauty: the Firenze Flower Show, the Giardino dell'Iris, and the Plant and Flower Market Show, each with its peculiarities. Florence transforms into an open-air stage where nature takes centre stage, offering a unique experience for experts and aspiring green thumbs looking for things to do in Florence during the spring.

Florence Flower Show – 6 and 7 April 2024

Florence is ready to welcome once again the Florence Flower Show, the exhibition of rare and unusual plants which, for the sixth consecutive year, will bring the best of Italian nurseries and craftsmanship to the wonderful Corsini Garden (Via della Scala 115) from 6 to 7 April 2024.

Around 70 exhibitors will exhibit at the Flower Show the rarest and most unusual varieties of plants from all over the world and the most particular artisanal products close to the "green" theme. The fairy-tale path visitors will pass through all the most particular, unobtainable and high-quality botanical varieties: you can walk immersed in a vast collection of succulent plants, each more unique than the other.

The spectacular nature of the event will then continue inside a real citrus fruit museum, with some of the rarest and oldest specimens and a wealth of aromas and colours that will certainly not go unnoticed. There will be no shortage of fruit trees, particular aromatic plants, a vast collection of ornamental grasses, perennials, and Japanese maples. And then the very particular carnivorous plants, a vast collection of ancient and modern roses and extravagant kokedama.

The cost of the ticket is €10 for a single day and €15 for two day admittance.

Iris Garden – from 25 April to 20 May 2024

From 25 April to 20 May, the period of flowering and maximum splendour, the Iris Garden (Iris is the lily of Florence!) reopens its doors; a floral oasis located a few meters from Piazzale Michelangelo, thus offering a breathtaking view. The garden will be open every day (including holidays) from 10.00 to 18.00 for almost a month of free visits to this particular reality in the heart of Florence.

The Iris Garden, managed by the Italian Association of the Iris Collection (A.I.C.I.), a non-profit organisation committed to conserving and promoting the different varieties of irises, was created in 1954. Its surface area of approximately two and a half hectares is divided into paths, stone paving, pitches, ladders and perimeter stairways, thus dividing it into areas that accommodate the different varieties.

Market Exhibition of Plants and Flowers – from 25 April to 1 May

The Spring Market Exhibition of Plants and Flowers, which will be held in the charming Giardino dell’Orticultura (Via Vittorio Emanuele II, 17) from 25 April to 1 May, coincides with the 170th anniversary of the Tuscan Horticultural Society.

Over 50 specialised exhibitors will offer a vast range of products in the floriculture, horticulture and fruit growing sectors, together with objects and crafts. During the event, visitors can participate in a rich cultural program, which includes courses, workshops, talks, book presentations, conferences and free seminars. Entrance is free.
