Caravaggio on Display in Florence: Villa Bardini Hosts "Boy Bitten by a Lizard"

"Caravaggio and the Twentieth Century. Roberto Longhi, Anna Banti", organized by Fondazione CR Firenze and Fondazione Roberto Longhi, will be hosted at Villa Bardini from March 27 to July 20, 2025.

Curated by Cristina Acidini and Claudio Paolini, this exhibition is much more than a traditional art show—it offers a comprehensive cultural journey through the life and work of one of the most influential intellectual couples of 20th-century Italy.

An Immersive Exhibition at Villa Bardini

Spread across twelve rooms, occupying the entire villa, the exhibition presents a remarkable collection of artworks, archival documents, and multimedia materials, many of which have never been shown before.
Among the highlights:

Caravaggio’s Boy Bitten by a Lizard
Jusepe de Ribera’s Apostles
A rare collection of ten works by Giorgio Morandi, personally gifted by the artist to Longhi and Banti

In total, the exhibition brings together 40 paintings, including drawings and watercolors, along with significant collections of original photographs and documents, showcasing the couple’s relationships with key figures in Italian culture. Notable names include writers such as Giuseppe Ungaretti, Giorgio Bassani, Vasco Pratolini, Carlo Emilio Gadda, and Pier Paolo Pasolini, as well as artists like Filippo de Pisis, Renato Guttuso, and Scipione.

A Legacy of Rediscovering Caravaggio

The exhibition celebrates Longhi and Banti’s pivotal role in reviving interest in Caravaggio and Italian 17th-century art. One of Longhi’s most significant contributions was the 1951 Caravaggio exhibition at Milan’s Palazzo Reale, which drew over 400,000 visitors and brought international attention back to the Baroque master.

Art Beyond the Canvas: Media and Education

The exhibition also highlights Longhi and Banti’s dedication to art education and dissemination through various media, from popular weekly magazines to television and radio. Visitors will have the opportunity to watch two documentary films produced by Longhi, dedicated to Carpaccio and Carlo Carrà.

"Caravaggio and the Twentieth Century" is a tribute to Roberto Longhi and Anna Banti’s lasting impact on Italian culture and art history, offering a unique narrative that enhances the legacy of the Roberto Longhi Foundation.
