Zeffirelli Museum in Florence: a unique experience for cinema and theater lovers

The Franco Zeffirelli Foundation celebrates the great director with an engaging journey for adults and children alike.

In the heart of Florence, a city that has illuminated the world with its beauty for centuries, lies a truly unique place where the memory of a great Maestro becomes a living, surprising experience: the Franco Zeffirelli Foundation. Here, the creative universe of one of the most beloved directors and set designers of the 20th century is preserved—and above all, it is shared in a new, engaging, and accessible way.

From Shakespeare to Pavarotti

Thanks to the vision of its president, Pippo Zeffirelli, the Foundation is not just an archive, but a museum that breathes and speaks to the present. Its 22 exhibition halls showcase sketches, costumes, set designs, photographs, and original documents, tracing Zeffirelli’s extraordinary career in cinema, opera, and theater. Multimedia rooms make the experience even more exciting: immersive installations, high-definition projections, and interactive archives transport visitors to some of the Maestro’s most iconic productions, from operatic masterpieces at La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera to cinematic triumphs such as Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Jesus of Nazareth. On stage, under his direction, shone opera legends such as Maria Callas, Plácido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti.

A museum for families

What makes the Foundation truly special is its openness to families and children. Beyond offering an invaluable cultural heritage to scholars and enthusiasts, the museum also provides programs designed for younger visitors: a personalized educational kit invites children to step into the shoes of budding set designers and directors, giving free rein to their imagination through games, creative activities, and workshops. It’s a fun way to discover art as a living language—something to touch, experiment with, and experience, not just observe. While parents immerse themselves in Zeffirelli’s great works, children enjoy a tailor-made adventure that sparks curiosity and creativity. It’s the perfect opportunity to spend quality time together, combining culture with fun.

At the Zeffirelli Foundation, beauty is not only contemplated: it is lived, heard, and experienced. A museum that inspires adults and ignites the imagination of children.
