EVENT DESCRIPTION
The Festival dei Popoli - International documentary film festival - reaches its 66th edition and collects, documents and promotes documentary cinema. Founded in 1959 by a group of human science scholars, anthropologists, sociologists, ethnologists and mass media scientists, the Italian institute Festival dei Popoli has been involved in the promotion and study of social documentary cinema for over sixty years.
The tribute scheduled for the 65th edition of the Festival dei Popoli, which will be held in Florence from 3 to 9 November under the artistic direction of Alessandro Stellino and organizational direction of Claudia Maci, will be dedicated to the Hungarian director Judit Elek. The retrospective, the first in Italy dedicated to the filmmaker, was born from the collaboration between the Festival dei Popoli and Calliope Arts Foundation on the three-year project "Women Trailblazers in Documentary Cinema", aimed at the rediscovery and celebration of female directors whose work has been underestimated or forgotten During the years.
This edition will be dedicated to filmmaker and exhibition curator Marie Losier (France, 1972). She works between Paris and New York and has presented her films and videos in museums, galleries, biennials, and international festivals. Throughout her career, she has chronicled the lives of renowned and critically acclaimed artists worldwide, such as the Kuchar brothers, Richard Foreman, Tony Conrad, Genesis P-Orridge, Alan Vega, Guy Maddin, Peter Hristoff, Peaches, Felix Kubin, and The Residents. Extravagant, poetic, dreamlike, and unconventional, her films explore the lives and work of these artists, their music, and their unique and singular art.
