The Joust of the Florentine Republic in Piazza Santa Croce starts with the outstanding historical parade of the Florentine Republic before the tournament, leaving from the four main basilicas, Basilica di Santa Maria Novella, Santa Croce, Santo Spirito and San Lorenzo to reach Piazza della Signoria, where the ceremony of the distribution of the spears to the jousters takes place at about 5.30pm. The very spectacular joust will take place in Piazza Santa Croce: here sixteen riders in armor will compete with speed and skill to insert their own spear in the rings on the Giglio machine. The four horse teams represent the four historic districts of Florence, each one distinct from its colour: Red for Santa Maria Novella, White for Santo Spirito, Light Blue for Santa Croce and Green for San Giovanni. The winner district will be awarded with the drape of victory and the Guelph spear.
