Description
The Decameron has left us a detailed description of the Florentine historical framework during the difficult period of the plague. With this itinerary you will see places that preserve the memory of terrible times. The starting point can only be Santa Maria Nuova, which was already active at the time when the disease spread and there an attempt was made to treat the first hundreds of infected people, many of them met their death.
Then you will visit the Venerabile Arciconfraternita della Misericordia which is a lay brotherhood active in Florence since the 13th century. And during the plague of 1348 it worked in the front line in the relief work and even more so during the plague of 1630 during which, transporting the "suspects" and infected to the hospitals, many of the confreres who worked on the front line met their death.
Walking in the Dante Alighieri district you will arrive at the Oratorio dei Buonomini which is one of the oldest charitable institutions in Florence.
You will arrive to visit the magnificent Piazza della Signoria with its multitudinous artworks. In the square is located the Loggia dei Lanzi which takes its name from the lansquenets.
Along via dei calzaioli you will meet the Church of Orsanmichele.
So you will end the tour in Santa Maria Novella, the starting point of the Decameron where ten young people meet to escape from the black plague by running in the countryside.
