MUNDI, The National Museum of the Italian Language

What you will find

The National Museum of Italian (MUNDI), the first large museum of the Italian language, located in the former monastery of the Santissima Concezione, within the complex of Santa Maria Novella, opened in the summer of 2022 with its first two rooms which will host a temporary introductory exhibition.

The initial name of the Museum, Mundi, intends to evoke two fundamental aspects for our language: the first is the relationship with Latin, the mother tongue (mundi is in fact the genitive of mundus, that is "world"), while the second is the idea of ??Italian as the language of the world (involved in a network of relationships that over the centuries have brought it into contact, in a fruitful reciprocal exchange, with many other languages ??of culture).

For at least twenty years, the scientific community linked to the history of the Italian language has been pursuing the project of creating an Italian museum. Now, thanks to the commitment of the Ministry of Culture together with the Municipality of Florence and the activity of a working group coordinated by Serianni himself in which the leading institutions that deal with the study and promotion of our language are represented (Accademia della Crusca , Accademia dei Lincei, Dante Alighieri Society, Association for the History of the Italian Language, Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia Treccani), that project has been realized.

MUNDI was conceived as a new generation museum, which combines traditional exhibition elements (manuscripts, books, paintings and objects related to the history of Italian) with a strong multimedia component. Some sections of the museum will be reserved for temporary monographic exhibitions. The permanent and temporary exhibitions will also be accompanied by a plan of didactic activities for the promotion of the Italian language: conferences, courses and seminars, book presentations, concerts.
