Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi presents the largest exhibition ever dedicated in Italy to Yan Pei-Ming, curated by Arturo Galansino, as part of the Palazzo Strozzi Future Art project developed with the Hillary Merkus Recordati Foundation.
Born in Shanghai in 1960, Yan Pei-Ming arrived in France in 1980, where he now lives and works. Combining East and West, his style takes up and amplifies the pictorial tradition through vigorous and broad brushstrokes with an often monochrome palette. Guiding him is a particular focus on subjects that, almost abstract at close range, acquire sharpness from afar.
In his monumental canvases he combines history and the contemporary by exploring genres such as portrait, landscape, still life and history painting. Thus private portraits of the mother and father or of characters such as Bruce Lee, Mao Zedong, Aldo Moro, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky alternate, together with original reinterpretations of famous works of art history such as Leonardo's Mona Lisa , The Death of Marat by David or Innocent X by Velázquez.
In the age of continuous reproduction and digital exploitation of the image, his paintings come to life from memories or photographs that weave together personal references or universal themes of visual culture. Famous works of art, public figures and intimate subjects dialogue in his work to reflect on the human condition between conventional forms and actuality, reality and imagination.
